Atayne 360 - April 2009

"Be Good to Yourself.  When nobody else will."

Steve Perry, Journey, Be Good to YourselfGreat words sung by former Journey front man Steve Perry.  Okay, so we are closet Journey fans here at Camp Atayne, but who isn't?  In fact, our "fearless leader" sometimes "motivates" the team with a little Journey.

We think it is super important to be good to more than just ourselves.  We also need to be good to our employees, suppliers, community, consumers, and environment.  To that end, we are proud to announce that Atayne is now a certified B Corporation.  What's a B Corp you ask? B Corps (B stands for Beneficial) are companies that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.  Unlike traditional corporations, Certified B Corporations are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on the long-term interests of their employees, suppliers, community, consumers, and environment.  You can check out our B Corp Profile here.

In celebration of this milestone, we are offering the loyal readers of Atayne 360 a 30% discount on all online orders though the end of April.  It's one more way we can be good to you.  To take advantage of this offer, put the code bgood in the coupon/promotional code field at check out.

Monthly Enviro Tip

trash running, trash runnerSince you may be inundated with green tips in honor of Earth Day (April 22), we are going to do something a bit different this month: a call to action.  We want 500 people to commit to doing just one trash run (or jog or walk) this week.  If you are new to the newsletter, you may be unfamiliar with trash running.  But it is as simple as it sounds.  Go for a run and pick up trash.

What is even better, there is something in it for you.  We are sponsoring a contest with I Run Far.  If you commit to a trash run this week (everyone is on the honor system), you will be entered to win one of five $50 Atayne gift certificates.  Check out the I Run Far website for all the details.

As an added bonus, we will throw in another chance to win a $50 gift certificate for Atayne 360 readers.  Email a picture and short story (what you collected, how much, etc) from your trash running adventures to adventure@atayne.com by Monday, April 27th, and you will be entered into a separate drawing to be held on April 28th.

Happy trash running!

The Trash Man Cometh

sam huber, ecorunner, ecorunningMilwaukee is home to beer, brats, motorcycles, and above all, the Godfather of trash running, Sam Huber.  While Sam may refer to it as Eco-Running, it's all the same in our book.  Grab a bag, tie on your shoes, move your feet, and pick up some trash.  Our profile on Sam has been a long time in coming.    We encourage you to integrate trash running into your routine.  And for all you self-proclaimed "non-runners", please remember the words of the Godfather himself, "Any fitness activity you choose to participate in, while at the same time performing environmental clean-up, labels you an 'Eco-Runner,' or whatever title you so choose. Eco-conscious behavior can involve so much more than just running. Try eco-walking, eco-hiking, eco-cycling, eco-kayaking, or even eco-golfing; the list goes on. The Eco-Runner concept can be applied to any activity you love. Leave nothing but footprints. And take someone else's trash with you. That is what eco-running/eco-fitness is all about!"

Where in the World is Atayne?

Trash running in Gaithersburg, MD of course!  On March 29 a big ol' team of trash runners got together for Runterra Gaithersburg.  It was once again another successful showing for the team as we estimate that 75% of the event's waste was recycled.  Check out a full recap of the outing on our Red Shirt blog.

A Glimpse Into the Future

If you made it this far, you probably noticed the many mentions of trash running.  Well, there is a reason for that...

Trash Runners Unite!

Stay tuned as we launch a grassroots trash running initiative in early summer.  It's a simple concept that goes like this:
  • Group meets once a month at local running path/trail
  • Group runs for trash
  • Group recycles what can be and trashes the rest
  • Group repeats again the next month
If you are interested in organizing a trash running group in your area, send an email to trashrunner@atayne.com.

Until Next Month, Keep it Clean,
