Atayne 360 - June 2010

What Do 26 Miles, 4 National Parks, a Farmer's Market, a Reusable Beer Glass, and a Shirt made of Trash Have in Common?

They are all part of this year's Freedom's Run

We are proud to announce that the race committee of Freedom's Run has selected Atayne as the supplier of participant tops.  There is a lot of talk about races "going green," and we think Freedom's Run is one of the few that is actually walking (or we should say running) the talk.

OK, so we may be a little biased since they are buying our tops, but check out their impressive list of environmental initiatives.  Our personal favorites:
  • Reusable BPA-Free, made in the USA Water Bottles
  • Reusable Beer Glasses
  • Post Race Farmer's Market
  • Atayne Tops for Participants (from 100% Recycled material, made in the USA)

freedoms run harpers ferryWe are sure many of you are starting to think about your summer and fall race schedule, and we think you should seriously consider Freedom's Run.  Not only is it set in a very picturesque location, there is a race for everyone with a Kids Run, 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon.  To give you even more incentive to support this great race, register for the race and send an email with your entry confirmation to adventure@atayne.com, and we will send you a $10 gift certificate.

Monthly Enviro Tip

bike to workWe think everyone knows that biking to work has many benefits.  It is a great way to reduce emissions, get in a workout, and reduce the stress from having to sit in traffic.

Unfortunately, the rate of people biking to work is pretty low.  The Census Bureau estimates that only 0.55% of Americans use a bicycle as the primary means of getting to work.  This low figure exists despite the fact that an estimated 50% of working Americans commute 5 miles or less to work.

Bike to Work Day may have already passed (May 21, 2010), but we think more than one day a year should be dedicated to biking to work.  For all of us in the northern hemisphere currently experiencing summer, let's get out of our cars and make this the Summer of Biking.

To find the best bike route, we recommend using Google Map's Bike Route Finder.  Just click on the Bike Icon above the address fields to get the best route for pedal- powered transit.  If you are a little nervous about testing out the route for the first time during rush hour, do a practice run on the weekend.

Pint Sized Trash Runners Hit the Playground

It was a proud day on May 20th at Camp Atayne as a group of future athletes and environmentalists from Willard Elementary School in Ridgewood, NJ hit the playground with their very own trash run.

Always willing to support trash runners of any size, we provided the group a few shirts for the "trash champions" and a card with 10 tips to be a "greener" athlete.

As reported back by 1st Grade teacher Chris K, the day proved to be a huge success.  Beyond the trash that they collected, the students walked (or ran) away with a new awareness of other environmental issues.  Some of the comments from the trash runners include:
  • "Mr. Kearns, I went all veggie on Wednesday, just like the card said."
  • "I walked to school all week!"
  • "I brought in my dad's old running shirts (to be recycled)."
  • "How do I filter water?"

If you are interested in finding out more about some of the other environmental initiatives of Willard Elementary, check out their Willard Green site.

Atayne at Play

Writer Parker Morse sported his Atayne top while covering the IAAF World Indoor Track Championships in Doha, Qatar.  This is Atayne's first confirmed visit to the Middle East.

It's a Little Known Fact

Congratulations to May's winner Mike M who knew that it takes between eight and fourteen 20 oz. PET bottles to make each Atayne top (depending on the shirt size).

Now for June's question.  Where is our new Men's and Women's Grind Cycling Jersey made?  This is a two part question as we are looking for both where the fabric is made and where the garment is cut & sewn.

Remember, all answers can be found on our website, blog, Facebook page, Twitter feed, or past issues of our newsletter.

To join in the fun, email your answer to adventure@atayne.com.  To be entered into the drawing for the $25 gift certificate, your answer must be received by Wednesday, June 30th.

Until next Month, Keep it Clean!
